Rhigos Mountain Road re-surfacing works
Following on from the £1.25m investment carried out on Rhigos Mountain Road last summer, a further £290,000 will shortly be invested to complete the re-surfacing of the road.
The work, which will be carried out alongside isolated strengthening works, will see the temporary closure of Rhigos Mountain Road in both directions from Tuesday, May 30, to Sunday, June 4.
It follows the 9km resurfacing of the busy commuter route last summer following damage sustained through several severe winters. The Council’s £1.25m project included drainage works, as well as new road markings and reflective roadstuds installed on the road.
Following positive feedback from road users the Council is taking the opportunity to finish re-surfacing the entire mountain road, with this year’s works relating to the Rhigos end of the road which was not re-surfaced last year.
The Council has previously allocated £290,000 for the overlay works this year, which will take place during the school holiday to minimise disruption.
While residents will not be able to travel between Treherbert and Rhigos on the mountain road, access to the viewing platform at the summit will be maintained from the Treherbert side of the road. The road closure will be between the summit and Rhigos roundabout.
Nigel Wheeler, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Director for Highways and Streetcare Services, said: “The Council will undertake these necessary works which require the closure of Rhigos Mountain Road.
“This follows the Council’s successful re-surfacing of the road last summer. More than 6,000 tonnes of tarmac was laid over three weeks, with the benefits to the road felt by thousands of residents and commuters.
“The works will cause disruption to people travelling between Treherbert and Rhigos. They will be carried out during the school holiday when it is anticipated that there will be less traffic will be on the road. The Council will ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible, to further minimise disruption to road users.
“The same diversion routes will be in place as during the works last year. The Council will ensure residents are kept fully up-to-date with progress.”
Advanced signage advising alternative routes will be in place on all approaches to Rhigos Mountain Road, to help drivers avoid the area.
