Upcoming works to Ynysmeurig Bridge in Abercynon this summer
The Council is giving advanced notice of disruptive works to Ynysmeurig Bridge in Abercynon which will take place later this summer – requiring a road closure of the main road and a significant diversion for motorists and bus users.
The structure supports the B4275 near River Row, and requires a major repair scheme which cannot be safely completed without a road closure. This phase of work has therefore been scheduled to take place during the school summer holiday to minimise disruption to the community. An indicative start date for the work is Wednesday, July 21, lasting six weeks until September 1.
Work will include replacement of the bridge parapets, scour repairs to the central pier and repointing of the abutment and central pier. The scheme also consists of repointing and rebuilding sections of the river wall supporting River Row, as well as vegetation clearance, located downriver of the bridge.
The Council has appointed Walters Ltd as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme, and both organisations will work hard to ensure disruption to the community is minimised as far as possible. Access for pedestrians will be maintained, while no school buses will be affected due to the holiday period. Access cannot be maintained for emergency services.
An alternative route for motorists will be from Station Road, Margaret Street, Edward Street, Ynysmeurig Road, Abercynon Road, Penrhiwceiber Road, Miskin Road, Cross Valley Link Bridge, A4059, Abercynon Roundabout, A472, Fiddler’s Elbow Roundabout, A4054 and B4275 to Ynysmeurig Bridge.
In the opposite direction, the route will be via B4275, A4054, A472, Abercynon Roundabout, A4059, Cross Valley Link Bridge, Miskin Road, Penrhiwceiber Road, Abercynon Road and Ynysmeurig Road to Ynysmeurig Bridge.
The Council is asking motorists to use these agreed diversion routes where possible. There are other local routes available, but extensive use of these routes will have a negative impact on nearby residential streets.
Vehicular access will be maintained to premises in River Row, as well as to the rear of premises in Gwendoline Terrace and Glancynon Terrace.
We understand that this upcoming scheme will be disruptive to local residents and road users, and the Council will provide a further update confirming the full arrangements nearer to the start date for the works.
