Royal Marines Visit RCT Falklands Memorial
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict, a team of Royal Marines have paid their respects at the Falklands Memorial at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
The representatives from Commando Units across the UK stopped off in Pontypridd during their four-day, 56-mile march in a bid to raise £56,000 in memory of their Comrades who fought and lost their lives during the Falklands Conflict.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, said: “It was wonderful to have the Royal Marines visit us. We owe our Armed Forces, Past and Present, such a huge debt of gratitude.
“Many lives were lost during the Falklands Conflict, including some local residents, and we remember them all. The Council will continue to do all that it can to support its Armed Forces community.”
During the Falklands Conflict in 1982, Royal Marines marched 56 miles across East Falkland to liberate the islands from Argentine occupation, facing bleak conditions and opposition along the way .
On April 2, 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, leading to a brief but bitter war, lasting 72 days.
During the fighting that followed, 649 Argentine and 255 British servicemen lost their lives, as did three Falkland Islanders. British forces regained the Falklands on June 14, 1982.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council was one of the first local authorities in Wales to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012, a commitment that was reaffirmed in 2018. The Local Authority was also presented with the Ministry of Defence’s prestigious Gold Award in 2017 in recognition of its approach to supporting the Armed Forces community locally.
