Cwm Taf Morgannwg welcomes Ty Gwyn Education Centre Students to Prince Charles Hospital
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board was delighted to welcome students from Ty Gwyn Education Centre in Aberdare recently to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil where they were given the opportunity to visit the current construction site, while being offered help with CV writing and interview techniques.
Working in partnership with Tilbury Douglas, Careers Wales and Ty Gwyn Education Centre, sixteen year old students Kaleb and Rhys were invited to visit the construction site at t hospital where Tilbury Douglas’ Construction Manager, Dave Murphy, gave them a tour to enhance the student’s knowledge of the construction industry. Following on from that, Kelly Edwards, Tilbury Douglas’ Social Value Manager set up mock interviews and CV writing.
Dave said: “Having students experience an on-site visit is an excellent way for them to see first-hand how the construction industry works.
“There are so many different roles within this industry and you can work your way up in a trade.
“It’s also a real good way of seeing if this job is actually what you want to do as a career, some people think they would like to work in construction, but when they actually start in the trade it’s not always what they expected.”
Three hundred million pounds is being spent on refurbishing Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB. It provides the Health Board with an excellent opportunity to involve the community in visits such as this to enable schools and colleges to gain experience in real life situations, as well as potentially helping with design and artwork as the works progress.
Deputy Head Teacher Gavin Groves from Ty Gwyn Education Centre said: “It’s great for our students to be able to leave the school environment and gain real life experiences in the workplace and meet the people who are carrying out the job.
“They can ask questions and see what different roles are available. We know many people want to live and work in their community so this is an excellent opportunity for them to see what kind of jobs are on their doorstep.”
As part of the work experience for students Michelle Common from Careers Wales also attended the visit, she said; “The opportunity for students to visit workplaces are essential for their progression into the workplace.
“Today these students have gained knowledge about roles on a construction site. They have carried out mock interviews and gained experience in CV writing. It’s great to be working in partnership with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board as a local employer and Tilbury Douglas as a major construction company.”
