Cwm Taf Morgannwg welcomes new chief executive Paul Mears
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has welcomed its new chief executive, Paul Mears, who joins the organisation having worked in the NHS in England since 2003.
Starting in the role at a time of great challenge, Paul’s focus will be on strengthening relationships with our communities and partners, as well as building on the openness and inclusivity that already exists at Cwm Taf Morgannwg. He has put in place a 100-day plan for his initial months in post, in order to meet as many staff, patients, partners and stakeholders as possible. These meetings and events will take place virtually or, where possible, on site adhering to social distancing measures. A number of online briefings have also been scheduled.
Paul said: “I feel privileged to have been appointed as CEO and to have the trust that the Board has placed in me to lead our organisation. I have worked in and around the NHS for 17 years in several organisations in England but this is my first experience of working in the Welsh system, so I am very aware that I have much to learn.
“I am conscious that I am joining CTM at a challenging time as we continue to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as restarting services within an ever-changing context. I know that many staff are feeling the pressure after months of intense stress that the pandemic has brought and I would like to acknowledge the incredible ways in which our communities have pulled together and how our partners have been working with us in response to COVID19.
“Despite the challenges, we have a great opportunity to really join up services and ensure that patients and their families can get the care they need, at the right time and in the right place. I believe my job is to create the environment at CTM in which all our staff can do fantastic things and I look forward to leading the organisation to an exciting future.”
Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB chairman Professor Marcus Longley said: “I am delighted to welcome Paul to the Health Board. He brings a huge wealth of experience and enthusiasm, and a deep belief in our capacity to keep moving forward on our improvement journey. This is an exciting, yet challenging, time and Paul’s experience and skills will help us to build on the positive work that’s already been put in place, as well as drive innovation and continued improvements across Cwm Taf Morgannwg. I am really looking forward to his contribution to our work.”
Paul, who takes over from interim chief executive Dr Sharon Hopkins, brings a wealth of experience to Cwm Taf Morgannwg, following a number of roles with the NHS in England and also as a healthcare consultant.
