Please can someone help. I am reseaching a family who once lived and worked in the above pub from ? 1861, certainly 1871, up until 1891.
Is there a photograph of the pub which I can get hold of or any information regarding the village.
The census states that they also lived in Cwmaman is it close. Sorry not from the area.
Many thanks

There is a very good history group in Cwmaman , based in St Josephs church, the Railway Inn is very close to the church and the family that lived there had a very good association with it , a window in the back of the church was dedicated by them, olso there is a plaque there given by this family to the church near the alter. In 1861 it was called the Railway Tavern, David Williams lived there with 3 males and 8 females . William Cates lived there in 1870.In the 1881 Census it was registered as No 8 Bwllfa Place with Thomas Cates aged 70yrs as the licenced Victualler. His wife's name is Urina Cates aged 68yrs.there were 2 sons William aged 22yrs,David aged 18yrs, Grandson George aged 11yrs,and two female servants.hope this is the family you are looking for.

There are several CATES in the telephone directory in the Aberdare area. Maybe worth trying them.
