Young Firefighters - More than just squirting water around!

The Young Firefighter scheme is a two year programme and is South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s flagship youth activity. It is a uniformed cadet scheme run for young people both male and female, aged 13*-18. We have branches at 10 Fire Stations in South Wales. Young Firefighters have their own fire engine, and specially adapted equipment, which they use in specially outlined specific activities which mirror firefighting drills they will learn the skills used by Fire Fighters and will be trained to use the fire fighting equipment such as hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus.

The main focus of the scheme is to develop citizenship in young people. SWFRS have a statutory duty to educate and prevent fire. Each of the Young Firefighters will work towards a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community and parts of this will focus on fire safety in the home, arson, anti-social behaviour and road traffic collisions. Young Fire Fighters also design their own community projects and will get involved in fundraising events.

At present there are groups operating in the following Fire Stations in each of our Unitary Authorities:-

What happens during these evenings ….
You will be supplied with a uniform and a fire kit. You will attend each drill night during the school term time from 6.30 until 9pm, and you will follow a youth training development programme in which you will take part in drills, exercises and learn how to use fire and rescue service equipment and know about our procedures. By taking part in these drills you will lean how to work as part of a team and learn self discipline. But above all you will have fun.

Our Instructors ….
Are all dedicated and enthusiastic. They are both operational Firefighters and non operational instructors. All hold enhanced CRB checks and all follow the Child Protection Act.
