YEAR 5/6 Hockey Festival
Wednesday the 12th of November 2014 Mountain Ash Comprehensive School held their first Hockey Festival. 130 year 5/6 students attended the festival with their class teachers to enjoy a fun filled
day of hockey skills and fun games.
The students were organised into groups whereby every child had the opportunity to mix with
children from other schools and make new friends and have fun throughout the day. The students
rotated on 10 stations whereby developing their hockey skills were the main focus. They also played
small sided games working on the new hockey principles of 4,6,8,9. This is a brand new way to play
hockey aimed at junior players, the programme follows the Play to Learn and Multi Skills ethos
which is directed at ability, rather than age.
There were 30 year 9 sports students helping to run the festival. All leaders were a credit to the
school and were excellent role models to the cluster primary school students. Bev Rogers who is
the Hockey Agent for RCT has worked extremely hard with our cluster primary schools. She has
delivered a number of hockey sessions in all our primary schools to prepare them for the festival.
Jessica Price and Hannah Bevan who are also Hockey Agents attended the festival to show their
support.s a PE department we wish to ensure that every young person enjoys a quality hockey experience
therefore we work with a number of organisations to ensure that we achieve this goal. The PE
department have a school club link with the Rhondda Ladies Hockey Club. The club have delivered a
number of sessions for the primary schools and have sent letters to parents. The club are looking to
increase the number of students in their U11’s & U9’s team and look forward to any new youngsters
who wish to take part in more hockey.
The event was a huge success and the head teacher and other senior management attended the
day. All the children enjoyed the day and it was rewarding to see so many making new friends in
readiness for September.
