WORLD CUP BECKONS FOR WELSH BOWLERS

Ten Welsh bowlers will be making the trip to New Zealand later this month to take part in the World Bowls Championships.

Held every four years, the sport’s showpiece competition is being held in Christchurch, with players from 34 nations competing for honours from November 29th until December 11th.

The Welsh squad has qualified male and females bowlers across all disciplines – singles, pairs, triples and fours – and will send five men and 5 women to compete across the competition.

Commonwealth Games medallists Robert Weale, Anwen Butten, Marc Wyatt and Jonathan Tomlinson are among those who will make the trip.

Hazel Wilson, women’s senior team manager, commented:

“We qualified across all the disciplines at the Atlantic Championships in Cyprus last year, so this is another positive step for bowls in Wales.

“We’ll be competing against the best in the world and it’s a huge challenge for our bowlers, but one we’ve been working hard to prepare for. We’ve played a test match against Scotland as part of the build-up.

“We’re expecting the greens to be quick given the warm weather at this time of year.

“We’ve got a good blend in our squads so we’re all looking forward to getting started now.”
