The Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced that Karen Roberts will be their candidate to fight the Assembly seat next May.
Ms Roberts is the RCT Welsh Lib Dem Campaign Manager and is familiar to many through her community involvement and her contribution to a number of local campaigns.
She was an active member of the Save Royal Glamorgan Services campaign which sought to prevent the closing of consultant led maternity and special care baby services and the downgrading of the A&E department. More recently she has been leading the fight against the Council's plans to reorganise schools in the Rhondda, creating 3 to 16 and 3 to 18 year schools.
"I am a Rhondda girl through and through and I am incensed by what is happening in this valley to our key services.
"As a governor at Tonypandy Community College for some eighteen years I am appalled by the plans this Labour Council has to remove the sixth form from us, along with Porth and Ferndale. To then merge Tonypandy and Porth with infant and junior schools is ludicrous.
"Our health services are being steadily eroded - our nearest main hospital, the Royal Glamorgan, is losing essential services; the minor injuries unit at Llwynypia is a part time, by appointment service and we are also losing out of hours GP services.
"The people of the Rhondda have been treated with contempt by the Labour party to which they have been so loyal.
"It is time someone started battling for the residents and for a fairer deal for the area."
Originally from Clydach Vale but about to move to Llwynypia Ms Roberts is chair of the Cwmclydach Development Trust, which runs a community centre, a Day Nursery and a micro hydro plant. She also has a long involvement with the Cambrian Village Trust and is a volunteer Director of Cambrian Lakeside.

Well at least you do answer your emails unlike the Plaid Cymru candidate for Rhondda and she is the supposed leader of her party but she has no time for constituents in South Wales Central.
