Warning following scam spike in region
People should be vigilant following a spate of telephone scams this week affecting people in Hirwaun, Pontyclun and Tonypandy.
Thousands of pounds have been handed over to criminals who have contacted their victims by phone.
Scammers have pretended to be from Microsoft, an internet provider, and also HMRC to dupe targets.
To steal money, they have managed to get their victims, aged 66 and 77, to give them remote access online bank accounts.
A 22 year-old woman was was told that they owed tax to the HMRC which could be paid in Amazon Gift vouchers.
People of all ages are urged to be aware of scams – nobody should give personal details over the phone or give remote access to devices or accounts.
Anybody who believes they have been targeted should report the matter to 101 or they can call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
