Wales unemployment rate still lagging behind under Labour

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have hit out at Labour’s lack of economic vision as statistics show Wales is still lagging behind on decreasing unemployment.

Statistics released today show that the unemployment rate in Wales has decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 6.2%, which is slower than the UK average decrease of 0.6 percentage points. The unemployment rate is the third highest of any UK region.

Eluned Parrott AM, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Economy Minister, said:

“With an unemployment rate that’s been higher than the UK average for many years now, there’s absolutely no excuse for it to be decreasing at a slower rate than the rest of the UK. Yet Labour’s mismanagement of our economy has left Wales stagnating.

“Labour Ministers are failing Wales with little support for small businesses to grow, and no long-term strategy to develop the skill base of our potential workforce. Wasting money on work experience schemes like Jobs Growth Wales will not give young people the skills they need to get on in life.

“Welsh Liberal Democrats are on the side of the entrepreneur and the small business owner: your contribution to our economy will be the foundation of our renewed Wales. We need to tear down the barriers that stop businesses from fulfilling their ambitions.”
