Wales must not be left behind, as UK unemployment reaches a ten year low
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics today reveal a mixed picture for Wales’ labour market.
Despite employment falling by 8,000 in the last quarter [September – November 2015], unemployment fell by 11,000 over the same period.
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, said:
“Unemployment reached a ten year low during this quarter across the UK, but things aren’t quite so rosy here in Wales.
“It’s clear that Britain’s economic recovery is strengthening, but under Labour there remains a danger that Wales could get left behind.
“Labour has a number of economic levers at its disposal here and it is essential that the Welsh Government clearly demonstrates that it is fully collaborating with the UK Government to ensure sustainable economic growth.
“Ultimately, you cannot pay for a good health service and better schools without a strong economy.”
Shadow Minister for the Economy, William Graham, said:
“Today’s figures once again highlight the fragility of the economic recovery in Wales.
“Employment in Wales remains the third lowest for any region in the UK, which highlights the need for the Welsh Labour Government to do all that it can to deliver year-round, sustainable job opportunities for Welsh workers.”
