Wales Bill Senedd debate welcomed

As the Senedd prepares to debate a Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee (CLAC) report on the draft Wales Bill today, Welsh Conservatives have reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to work with the UK government on the Bill’s development.

Speaking in the National Assembly later, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives will welcome the Secretary of State for Wales’ willingness to look at alternatives to proposals surrounding ‘necessity testing’ and ‘Minister of Crown Consents’; issues highlighted by the CLAC report.

Conservatives in government continue to deliver for Wales and the draft Bill is one part of new devolution architecture that puts Welsh communities at its heart.

Welsh Conservative Leader, Andrew RT Davies AM, said:

“Make no mistake, this Bill is a potentially landmark piece of legislation for Wales.

“It will deliver an improved model of devolution, introduce a historic funding floor, remove the need for a referendum to trigger a Welsh rate of income tax – and it will put our communities first.

“The draft Bill remains in a fluid period of discussion and I, like the Secretary of State for Wales, welcome this constructive report.

“There are clearly question marks over contentious areas and collaborative work on alternatives to these issues will continue.

“This is our opportunity to get devolution right and the Welsh Conservative group looks forward to close ongoing work with the UK government as the draft Bill is taken forward.

“The current arrangements – introduced by Labour – have failed to provide a lasting resolution and I am confident that this Bill will solve those problems.”
