UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award
Ty Gwyn Education Centre in Aberdare has achieved the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award – the only one in Wales.
The Rights Respecting Schools award scheme is run by UNICEF, the global social welfare organisation which operates in 192 countries and territories around the world.
UNICEF works closely with schools all over the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

“As a champion of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, UNICEF advocates for governments to protect and promote the rights of every child, believing that children’s rights should never be compromised by their circumstances.
“Rhondda Cynon Taf Council supports that view and children’s rights are already central to our ethos and are embedded in everything we do to provide a quality, tailored education for all our pupils whilst promoting their holistic development and well-being and meeting their additional needs.”
The learners, staff and all associated with Ty Gwyn Education Centre are proud to receive the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award as they continue to ensure their community is aware of their rights, and that those rights are taught, learned, practiced, respected, protected and promoted.
Victoria Cox-Wall, Head at Ty Gwyn Education Centre, said: “We are all delighted to receive the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award following an 18-month journey during which we have re-structured our teaching, learning and support for learners and staff.
“This is such a prestigious award as UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation for children and their rights, working with families, local communities, partners and governments around the globe to help every child survive and flourish.
“Our curriculum promotes skills development, independence and creativity and we place a strong emphasis on the voice of every child being heard.”
The UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award is based on the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. It seeks to encourage schools to place the rights of the child at the absolute heart of everything that they do, from strategic planning and policy making to all teaching, learning and assessment and wider leisure, culture and community activities.
