Unfortunate start for lido as children’s splash pool closes for “maintenance.”

Just a week after it opened to the public one of Ponty Lido's three pools has been closed for – the Council say – "planned maintenance".

Local Councillor Mike Powell says

"The splash pool, intended for the youngest children, is out of action. When I asked why the response was that there was maintenance work planned, but this seems somewhat strange. The lido is only going to be open for a few more weeks at most before it closes until next May, why would they plan maintenance now?

"I heard from a few people that there were problems earlier this week with the surface of the splash pool, with bubbles apparently appearing in the top layer. So I went down to take a look myself.

"As a former Quantity Surveyor and now heating engineer who has worked in the construction industry for a number of years it looks to me from a brief observation as if the waterproof covering has become detached. If this is the case then it seems as if the issue was with the construction.

"This project has cost over six million pounds and is being promoted as a major tourist attraction for Pontypridd. It is not a good advert when people travel here with young children only to find one of the three pools is already out of action.

"The lido was months behind the due finishing date when it eventually opened. I hope that corners weren't cut in order to get it open before the end of the summer and that any problems are limited to just the one section.

"The facility is looking excellent and has apparently been well used in the short time it has been opened. The last thing that is needed are any more hitches."
