Town Centre Maintenance Grant extended to Aberdare, Porth and Ferndale

The Council is now accepting applications for its Town Centre Maintenance Grant from businesses in Aberdare, Porth and Ferndale – thanks to an expansion of the scheme and an additional £150,000 investment.

The Grant, which was first offered by the Council to businesses in Mountain Ash and Tonypandy during October 2017, helps business owners improve their property fronts – creating more welcoming and vibrant Town Centre retail areas. After its success, the Grant was extended to Treorchy from July 2018.

To date 104 projects have been approved – 35 in Tonypandy, 33 in Mountain Ash and 36 in Treorchy. Total grants worth £99,000 have been approved, with the local businesses investing almost £70,000. The Town Centre Maintenance Grant has therefore initiated around £170,000 of property front improvements across the three towns, contributing to around 60% of the works.

Now, following a delegated decision by the Council, the Grant has been extended to include Aberdare, Porth and Ferndale, from April 1, 2019. This will utilise a £150,000 investment, with a £50,000 budget for each area.

Works must be carried out by a reputable contractor, and the scheme will contribute a maximum of 75% towards eligible costs – with a maximum grant of £1,000. A further grant of up to £300 (75% maximum contribution) may also be available where scaffolding or skip hire is required to carry out the work.

Councillor Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Housing, said: “I’m delighted that the Council has extended the very successful Town Centre Maintenance Grant to also include Aberdare, Porth and Ferndale from April 1.

“More than 100 projects, investing a total of £170,000 in improving property fronts, have now been approved across Tonypandy, Mountain Ash and Treorchy – with around 60% of the costs contributed by the Grant. I’d like to thank local businesses for getting involved and working with the Council, as the scheme has made a visible improvement to the three retail areas.

“This very innovative scheme is one of a number of measures the Council is undertaking to improve and attract more people to our Town Centres. The latest was announced by the Council Leader at the recent Council meeting on March 27 – to provide free WiFi, which will become available in our Town Centres over the next year to benefit businesses, residents and visitors.

“From the week commencing April 1, the Council’s Town Centres team will be contacting local businesses about the Town Centre Maintenance Grant extension – targeting owners of all eligible buildings in Aberdare, Porth and Ferndale, in order to make them aware of the Grant and how to apply for it.

“I’m looking forward to seeing more and more businesses take the opportunity to make improvements to their property fronts, subsidised by the Council, in order to attract more visitors to our Town Centres.”
