Theatr Brycheiniog marks Dementia Action Week 2018 with a Free Drumming Workshop!
To mark Dementia Action Week Theatr Brycheiniog will be hosting a free drumming workshop on Saturday 26 May between 11am and 12pm. The friendly and informal workshop will allow participants to exercise their brains while creating some energising group rhythms on the drums and percussion instruments. The workshop is open to everyone and booking isn’t required.
Dementia Action Week 2018 takes place from Monday 21 – Sunday 27 May, and asks everyone to unite and take actions, no matter how big or small, in order to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. There are numerous activities taking place in and around Brecon to mark this very special week, which in 2014, was the first place in Wales to be recognised by the Alzheimer's Society as 'working towards becoming a dementia-friendly community.’
Since 2017, Theatr Brycheiniog have been working with Lynn Kay of Beat It Percussion to offer weekly dementia-friendly Drumming Together sessions for older adults who have memory loss and aging-related conditions. The sessions welcome people with all levels of ability who may be looking for something social and creative to participate in. A new programme of Drumming Together sessions will be starting in September, and there will be opportunities for volunteers to participate in these sessions.
Other activities taking place in Brecon to mark Dementia Action Week include a free Dementia Matters in Powys Tea Dance on Tuesday 22 May at Kensington Hall which will feature music from the 50s, 60s and 70s; a Bring and Buy Sale on Thursday 24 May from 10am at Brecon Guildhall; and Fundraising Bag Packing on Friday 25 May from 10am at Morrisons, both of which are being run by Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community (BADFC) volunteers.
Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon’s Centre for the Arts opened in April 1997, as the first wholly funded Lottery new build arts organisation in the UK. The Arts Centre is situated in one of the most picturesque locations of any venue in the UK. Built alongside the canal basin in the heart of Brecon, serving the town and surrounding areas of Powys, Monmouthshire and beyond, it is rooted firmly in the community it serves. The venue currently provides a varied programme of theatre, dance, music and entertainment in its purpose built 478 seat auditorium and 120-seat studio/rehearsal space. It also hosts an exhibition programme in the Gallery.
The Arts Centre serves not only its community through an outstanding programme of quality professional English and Welsh language production, but it is also home to the Brecon Baroque Festival, which attracts audiences and visitors nationally and internationally. The Gallery exhibits local, national and international artists, with spaces for hire for community and commercial use and our Pop-up Waterfront Café and Bar serves a varied locally sourced menu.
