Statistics reveal huge number of absences in schools in Wales

New statistics show that a total of 62,921 children were absent from school for 40.5 days or more between September 2021 and July 2022.

In addition, more than 1-in-10 have missed a week or more since last September. School absences have been a huge challenge since the end of COVID restrictions.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies MS, said:

“It is essential that children are in the classroom, learning from their teachers in a face-to-face environment.

“Children in Wales missed more school days than in any other part of the United Kingdom, making it even more important that absences and truancy are stamped out.

“Labour ministers need to get a serious grip on attendance problems before we have a lost generation on our hands.”
