Running start for Beat the Street in Rhondda Cynon Taff as 9,000 people start playing
More than 9,000 local people are hitting the streets of Rhondda for Beat the Street, a fun physical activity initiative designed to get communities moving.
Beat the Street is being funded in Rhondda Cynon Taff by the National Charity Partnership – a partnership between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Tesco.
Since Beat the Street kicked off in Rhondda Cynon Taff on Wednesday 17th May, the local community has already travelled an incredible 18,000 miles together – the equivalent distance of 450 times the length of the River Taff.
The aim of Beat the Street is to encourage thousands of people in Rhondda to get active and make lasting changes to their health. It gets people moving by transforming the town into an interactive game with players tapping cards and fobs against special sensors called Beat Boxes on lamp posts.
The more Beat Boxes players tap, the more points they receive. Players can win individual prizes or join a team and help their favourite school, business or community group take home a trophy and up to £1,000 worth of sport and fitness equipment.
Jenna Hall, Programme Director for The National Charity Partnership, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to Beat the Street within the first few days of the game. However, there’s still time to join in whatever your age. Whether you’re an individual, a business, a voluntary organisation or a team, there are great prizes to be won and the incentive of getting more active.”
The game is running until Wednesday 5th July. Those looking to get involved are able to pick up a card at their local library or leisure centre. Players register their card online at beatthestreet.me/rct to join and support a team.
