#runforDude at this year’s Cardiff 10K and Half Marathon

A dedicated team of fundraisers will be taking on this year’s Cardiff 10K and Half Marathon to raise vital funds in memory of Cardiff schoolboy Peter Baldwin, known as ‘Dude’.

His father, Stuart Baldwin is inviting others to join the team raising money in aid of Diabetes UK Cymru who will #runforDude in the Cardiff 10K on Sunday 6 of September and the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday 4 October.

The Whitchurch High School pupil was just 13 when he passed away in January due to the complications of undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. Since then his family, friends and teachers have all been raising money for Diabetes UK Cymru through a series of events and challenges to support others living with diabetes in Wales and raise awareness of the condition.

Stuart said: “The support we’ve had so far has been incredible and we really want to encourage anyone who is thinking of running the Cardiff 10K or Half Marathon to think about joining our team. Peter was an amazing boy who we all miss deeply but by raising funds for charity in his memory we can help make a real difference.”

The money raised will be used to raise awareness of the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes in children across Wales.

Type 1 diabetes is a serious lifelong condition that affects around 1500 children in Wales. The symptoms of the condition include:

• Needing to pass urine more than usual, especially at night

• Feeling thirsty

• Losing weight without trying to

• Often feeling very tired

• Having blurred eyesight

• Often feeling itchy around the genitals, or having regular infections like thrush

• Having a cut that takes a long time to heal

Diabetes UK Cymru’s Director Dai Williams said: “Though I never had the chance to meet Peter, the joy he brought to his family, friends and teachers is clear to see.

“We want to carry on Peter’s positivity by making sure we raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes, its symptoms and how serious the condition is. By supporting Peter’s appeal you will be helping us in our work to stop this tragedy happening to another family.”

“Those who knew Peter have already raised an incredible amount in his memory and we want to make sure that this makes a real difference.”

Those choosing to run for Diabetes UK Cymru will receive a running vest and training advice to get them prepared for the challenge.
