Road closure arrangements for Pontcynon River Bridge scheme

The Council has announced the road closure arrangements for its ongoing essential repair scheme to the Pontcynon River Bridge in Abercynon.

The scheme started in July 2019 following the discovery of defects during a number of inspections of the structure. The £129,000 #RCTinvest scheme, which includes repointing and crack repairs to the bridge, is included within the Council’s £25.9m Highways Capital Programme for 2019/20.

Contractor Walters UK Ltd has so far carried out work that has not required traffic management – but upcoming activity to remove and rebuild the bridge parapet requires a temporary closure of the B4275 north of Park Road, for 40m. This closure will begin on Monday, September 9, lasting up to a month.

An alternative route, which will be signposted, is via B4275, A4059, Mountain Ash Bridge, Commercial Street, High Street, Llanwonno Road, Hawthorn Terrace, Glamorgan Street and Abercynon Road – or this route in reverse order. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and emergency services.

Abercynon Sports Centre will remain open as usual – with access to Park Road gained off the B4275, from the direction of Abercynon only.

The Council will contact parents about the local home to school transport arrangements during the closure period, before it gets underway.

Thank you for your continued cooperation during these essential repair works.
