Rhondda Swimming Club continues its meteoric rise with huge successes
Rhondda Swimming Club continues its meteoric rise with huge successes at recent swim meets and a burgeoning activity in the life of the club
At this year's SE Wales Sub-Regional championships, held in Newport on the last weekend of November,Rhondda Swimming Club entered 27 swimmers, the highest number for many years. Head Coach Craig Napper said the swimmers racked up so many medals and personal best times, he lost count. Two new club records were set at the meet by Jac Wood-Jones in the 200m butterfly (2.54) and by Brandon Rees in the 50m freestyle (27.09).
Another amazing highlight was the club's strong performance in the relay events, where we entered 14 teams and won 10 medals (seven gold, one silver and two bronze). That Rhondda beat big clubs such as Cardiff did us all proud and stands us in good stead for our continued rise, Mr Napper said.
He added: "It's nice to get PBs, we had loads. It's nice to get medals, we had lots – too many to count. It's nice to get club records, we had two from Brandon and Jac. But the team spirit and the performance, the attitude of all the swimmers, especially in the relays, showed that Rhondda Swimming Club is definitely the club on the rise."
Separately, the club was represented by three senior swimmers at the level two Welsh Short Course Championships on 2 December at Wales National Pool, Swansea. The meet is aimed at aimed at the top ranking swimmers in Wales. Brandon Rees, Jac-Wood-Jones and Thomas Williams all put on "awesome performances", said Mr Napper.
He expects the club's growth to continue and to send an increasing number of swimmers to next spring's Regional Championships and 6-8 swimmers to next summer's Welsh National Championships.
At last weekend's friendly inter-club gala in Pontypool, the club finished second out of six clubs, with a fine all-round performance once again, and yet another club record tumbling.
The club's competitive swimmers have a busy programme of meets coming up. They train throughout the week and enjoy high fitness levels and great camaraderie many youngsters dream of. It offers qualified and methodical instruction to young swimmers, with total emphasis on technique and development of swimming skills (and having fun!).
