Rhondda Cynon Taf Council reducing service Green Waste Collection Changes
From November 5th, the way the Council collects your recyclable green waste, which includes garden waste and small vegetarian animal waste will change.
During the winter months (November 5th to March 4th), when demand for the service is lower, green waste collections will be picked up fortnightly instead of weekly – on the same day but not at the same time as your black bag/bin waste.
Green waste is collected by a separate vehicle and is unlikely to be collected at the same time of day as your household waste or recycling, please leave it at the kerbside and the crews will collect it as soon as possible.
From 10th December residents will be able to book in their 'real' Christmas trees for kerbside collection between 31st December until 11th January.
Residents must book their 'real' Christmas tree collections online as they won't be automatically collected.
The fortnightly green waste collection service (including 'real' Christmas trees not booked for a collection) will be suspended from Saturday 22nd December until Sunday 13th January. This will help accommodate the increased demand on the service for general/food waste recycling and 'real' Christmas tree collections. Normal fortnightly green waste collections will resume from Monday 14th January.
Last year the Council recycled over 6500 tonnes of garden waste, which is turned in to compost and woodchip for gardens and parks.
The full green waste service will return to weekly collections from March 4th and continue throughout the spring and summer months until the end of October.
The latest changes follow the new rules that were introduced in June 2018, where households were limited to two standard black bags or 1 wheelie bin (lid closed) in a bid to further increase recycling rates.
It is estimated that 3 out of 4 residents are continuing to do a great job at recycling and have been unaffected by the black bag/bin waste limits, as on average 80% of household waste is recyclable – that's 8 out of every 10 bags of waste created by households being recycled and turned in to something new.
Those who still don't recycle are being urged to support a greener future or face a potential £100 Fixed Penalty Notice.
There is no excuse not to recycle in Rhondda Cynon Taf with UNLIMITED weekly, dry, food waste and nappy recycling along with a number of community recycling centres across the County Borough, which also accept green waste for recycling and are open 7 days a week from 8am – 5.30pm (November – March).
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said:
"During the winter months the demand for a weekly green waste service is very low and the change to winter fortnightly collections will improve the efficiency of the service and reduce travel emissions.
“The new rules that were introduced earlier this year are already helping to increase recycling figures and we are urging those residents who are still not recycling to support a greener future – the choice really is clear. We estimate that 75% of residents are recycling and that is why the new rules and awareness raising activity are targeted at those who do not.
“As part of the changes we introduced the CLEAR A-Z recycling search tool which is helping residents to find out what you can and can't recycle in our County Borough. This tool and the introduction of the new rules is proving to be very useful in helping us in our aim to hit the Welsh Government recycling targets for 2024/25 of 70% and avoid large fines being imposed."
