Reen restoration project continues to lower flood risk in Peterstone
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have been working to clear 225 metres of overgrown reen to protect homes from flooding.
The Internal Drainage Districts (IDD) have been working on projects like this since joining NRW earlier this year and were due to carry out work on the Gwent Levels, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The IDD ran into trouble when historic pollution was identified on site that could have spread further into the river and threatened the entire project.
Thanks to the local knowledge of our teams, NRW were able to clear this pollution quickly and continue with our work on reducing the flood risk to homes near the reen.
John Hogg, Head of Operations South for NRW, said:
“It’s great to see teams within the organisation pulling together for a result like this.
“This was done in a very tight time frame but excellent local knowledge and experience meant that the work was completed to the delight of the residents, while also addressing a longstanding pollution issue.
“Schemes like these are so important to local communities, we all know the damage flooding can do so the more of these projects that are finished the better.
The recently completed work in Peterstone started in September and is the third operation of the scheme to be completed.
Not only will this scheme lower flood risk but will also encourage the special flora and fauna that grow at the Gwent levels.
