Recycling Competition Winner Announced
Three winning schools have collected the equivalent weight of 557 jumpers in school uniform to scoop top prizes in this year’s Reuniform Recycling Challenge.
St Margarets RC Primary School scooped the top prize and has been announced as the winner of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s school Reuniform recycling competition as they collected a massive 139,500g – equivalent to 307 school jumpers!
They were closely followed by SS Gabriel & Raphael RC Primary School, who collected the equivalent weight of 167 jumpers and Llwyncelyn Infants School who scooped third prize for collecting the equivalent weight of 83 jumpers!

The challenge, which was set in September, asked schools to collect as much school uniform as possible and bring them in to their schools to be recycled or reused. The total amount of uniform collected was then calculated in line with the number of pupils at the participating school to find the overall winner.
A total of 21 schools took part in the challenge which saw over 1,074,750grams of school uniform collected – that’s equivalent to the weight of 2369 jumpers, which would take 134 washing loads to clean!
The top three schools scooped cash prizes for their winning efforts with St Margarets RC Primary School receiving £300, SS Gabriel & Raphael RC Primary School receiving £100 and Llwyncelyn Infants School receiving £50.
The three schools received their prizes in a special event which allowed them to see how much waste was collected by all 21 schools – The collected uniform items were stacked in washing piles, to showcase just how important recycling just one item can be.
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure & Culture, said:
“Congratulations must go to the pupils of all the 21 schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf that took part in the competition.
“They collected an unprecedented amount that has resulted in over 1000kg of potential waste being re-used, recycled and successfully diverted from landfill.
“The pupils have shown a real enthusiasm for recycling and understand why it is so important. We plan to hold a similar competition over the Christmas holidays and are asking all schools to get on board, by recycling their Christmas cards.
“Recycling should now be a vital part of all our lives. As we run out of space for our waste, we have to do all we can to ensure we reduce what we throw away, reuse what we can and recycle at every opportunity. The Council is championing various services to help all its residents think green and recycle, including a free weekly kerbside dry, food, nappy and green waste recycling service. We all need to do our bit and show we love where we live and take pride in our area – together we can make a difference as these school pupils have shown.”
