Race Begins To Enter Nos Galan 2015

The wait is over – online registration has opened for this year’s world-famous Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash.

This year marks the 57th anniversary of the New Year’s Eve event – and entering is now easier than ever before, as more and more people are using the online registration form.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee opened online registration for this year’s Nos Galan Road Races at 10am on Monday, September 7.

The Nos Galan Road Races are held each year in memory of legendary Welsh runner Guto Nyth Bran. It attracts thousands of athletes of all ages and abilities from around the globe.

Race places are usually taken up very quickly in all age categories, so the advice is book your place early to avoid disappointment.

Previously, there has been such overwhelming demand for places that some runners who tried to register were unable to do so as the race categories had reached their full capacity long before race night.

Last year, due to the overwhelming demand, there was NO race registration on the day.

The annual event on Thursday, December 31, is organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee.

The fun starts in the town centre at 4pm with the first of the children’s races. There will also be an elite race and the adult 5k fun run. Other attractions will include a spectacular fireworks display.

But the highlight of the night will be the arrival of the eagerly-anticipated Nos Galan Mystery Runner – a celebrity man or woman who each year represents the spirit of Guto, carrying the torch from his graveside at St Gwynno’s Church, Llanwonno, down the hillside to the town centre four miles away.

Previous mystery runners have included Adam Jones, Linford Christie, Alun Wyn Jones, John Hartson, Shane Williams,  James Hook, Nicole Cook, Jamie Roberts, Martyn Williams, Lillian Board, Gethin Jenkins, David Bedford, Dai Greene, Ron Jones and Berwyn Price.

Cllr Ann Crimmings, chair of the Nos Galan Committee and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, said: “As always, the Nos Galan Road Races are a highlight in the Council’s events calendar each year and demand for places has never been greater.

“Last year, all race entries were taken up long before New Year’s Eve, and we anticipate similar scenes again in 2015 as people sign up to take part in the world-famous and award-winning Nos Galan Road Races.

“The event has grown in popularity enormously in recent years with a record number of entrants taking to the streets of Mountain Ash last year on December 31.

“So our advice to all those wishing to take part in the 2015 Nos Galan Road Races is to get your applications in early to avoid any disappointment.”
