PUPILS at CAPCOCH PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATE PLATINUM STATUS

Pupils at Capcoch Primary School have proven their green credentials after being awarded a top eco award.

Capcoch Primary School have been awarded the prestigious Platinum Flag Award after previously gaining three Green Flag Awards thanks to the environmental education programme, Eco-Schools.

Eco-Schools is an international programme run in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy and funded by the Welsh Government. Over 90% of schools in Wales are registered on the programme.

The Eco-Schools programme inspires and empowers pupils to be leaders of change in their community, helping them learn about sustainable living and global citizenship while giving them the information and support they need to make changes that will benefit their school, local environment and wider community, such as reducing waste, energy consumption, transport, biodiversity, healthy living and litter issues.

As part of their Eco-Schools Platinum assessment, Capcoch Primary School worked alongside Keep Wales Tidy to develop a new nature garden to encourage wildlife back into the area. The Schools Eco Warriors, also worked with Tim Jones from RCT’s Environmental team to carry out regular litter picks in the surrounding area.

Alexa Ross (the School’s Eco Co-Ordinator), said: “We are delighted that we have achieved the Platinum Award. It is wonderful to be recognised for all the hard work that the staff and pupils have put in over the past ten years. The children in particular have played a very important part in developing our Eco Schools ethos and will continue to carry on this throughout their time in our school and hopefully though out their lives. Since starting Eco Schools, the School has made a lot of changes to help improve the environment, in particular the development of our school grounds. The children now have opportunities to use outdoor classrooms, keep active on the adventure play equipment and observe wildlife in our lovely new nature garden. It is amazing to think how far we have come over the last ten years. We look forward as a school, to continuing with our work to help improve the environment that we live in.

Tim Wort, Education Officer for Keep Wales Tidy said:

“The Platinum Flag is a very impressive achievement and highlights the enthusiasm and commitment that Capcoch Primary School has towards sustainable development. The dedication of the Eco-Committee over many years has been inspirational. I’d like to congratulate and thank all of the pupils and staff involved for their hard work!”
