Primary school pupils excel during Road Safety Quiz

Primary school pupils have tested their knowledge of the Highway Code in Rhondda Cynon Taf’s annual road safety quiz – a fun, educational way to help them to stay safe as pedestrians, cyclists and car passengers.

The Council’s Road Safety Team, along with South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, hosted the quiz in the Mayor’s Chamber at the Municipal Buildings in Pontypridd on May 17. Six top-scoring schools were invited to the event having excelled in the preliminary round of the quiz earlier this year, when 32 schools from across the County Borough took part.

The final six schools were Treorchy Primary, Cwmdâr Primary, Gwauncelyn Primary, Llanilltud Faerdref Primary, Pontrhondda Primary and Ton Pentre Juniors – and they tackled eight rounds of challenging questions in the quiz.

The final round saw Cwmdâr Primary triumph as worthy winners, while Gwauncelyn Primary was runner-up. The winning school will now represent Rhondda Cynon Taf at the South Wales Police Road Safety Final, where they will come up against pupils from neighbouring County Boroughs, and have the chance of taking home the South Wales Police Shield.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “The road safety quiz is an important event in the Road Safety Team’s annual calendar – as part of its wider work with schools all year round to ensure young people across Rhondda Cynon Taf have the knowledge and confidence to remain safe when they are out and about in our communities.

“Another important event is Road Safety Week, run by charity Brake each November, when the Council and partner agencies engage with residents. In 2017, this included on-location exercises to record drivers using a phone behind the wheel, as well as information events, cycle and pedestrian training at a number of schools and a Drive Safer for Longer workshop aimed at motorists over the age of 65.

“Congratulations to all six schools for making the final of the Council’s road safety quiz in 2018 – especially the winners, Cwmdâr Primary, who will now go on to represent Rhondda Cynon Taf in the South Wales Police final.”
