On Thursday 2nd July there are two by elections for Pontypridd Town Council in Trallwn and the Graig wards.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats will be fielding candidates in both - they will be Amanda Jones in Trallwn and Lee Thacker in the Graig.
Both have been involved to various degrees along with other local party members in numerous local campaigns such as the battle against the downgrading of the Royal Glamorgan hospital and the cuts to nursery education.
Amanda joined the party after becoming involved with the campaign to save the paddling pool in Ynysangharad Park. After a long fight which included a local referendum the Labour Council decided to remove it regardless of public opinion.
"Like many local residents I was very disappointed with the way in which RCT Council rode roughshod over local opinion with regard to the paddling pool. I was also annoyed that Pontypridd Town Council did absolutely nothing to prevent the destruction of such an historic part of our town.
"They are supposed to be our representatives yet the Labour dominated Council simply went along with their colleagues in RCT Cabinet."
Lee Thacker also thinks the Town Council should do more to fight for a better deal for Pontypridd town.
"Whilst RCT Council obviously has greater responsibility at a county wide level the Town Council should be putting Ponty first. They should be speaking up more about things which affect the town and its regeneration.
"Town Councillors should also play more of a part in their local communities. Many people do not know who their representatives are or indeed what the Town council does."
