Optical career in sight for Aberdare woman
AN Aberdare woman who spent nearly a year supporting Specsavers store openings in Australia has returned home to mark another milestone in her burgeoning eye care career – qualifying as a dispensing optician.
Becky Shannon, 28, joined Specsavers in Aberdare almost five years ago as an optical assistant. Rising quickly up the ranks, she moved to Australia for just under a year to support store openings in Melbourne and Sydney.
Now, back in Wales and with her sights firmly set on a long-term career in the field, she has completed her dispensing optician training – allowing her to advise customers at the Victoria Square store on vision care and fit their glasses.
‘A career in optics wasn’t my first choice, but I’m so glad I made the decision to give it a try,’ says Ms Shannon. ‘After college I went to University, but that wasn’t for me.
‘Working at Specsavers has opened a lot of doors for me. I’m considering further training in low-vision and would like to support other colleagues with their development as well. Without the support of the team, none of this would be possible. Thanks to everyone who has helped me over the last five years.’
Neil Robinson, store director, adds: ‘In her young career, Becky has shown the drive and ambition that we encourage in all of our staff. Our local customers expect a high standard of care, and Becky is a prime example of the professionalism we offer at our store.’
