NRW officers act to stop smouldering waste site catch fire
Natural Resources Wales officers are working with colleagues from South Wales Fire and Rescue and Bridgend County Borough Council to prevent several thousand tonnes of waste woodchip catching fire.
Reports that the woodchip which is being stored illegally on the former Llynfi Power Station site near Maesteg, was smouldering were first received on Friday. Officers closely monitored the situation over the weekend and dealing with this site remains a priority.
Jon Willington, waste regulation team leader for NRW, said:
”We are working closely with our partners and with the site operator and occupier to establish responsibility for the woodchip being onsite and to decide the best and quickest course of action to remove the immediate fire risk posed by the waste.
“We are concerned about the potential impacts a fire would have on the River Llynfi and a nearby paper mill and as soon as we have established who is responsible we will be seeking to ensure the woodchip is removed from site.”
