New Year Recycling Celebrations!

New Year Celebrations as Rhondda Cynon Taf Council congratulates its residents on its best ever recycling figures for December 2015!

Residents across Rhondda Cynon Taf have had a very green Christmas, with more and more residents joining in the fight against waste!

The Streetcare team have been out in all weather collecting the substantial amount of recycling residents have been putting out for, with one residents placing out 30 bags and a street in Maerdy recycling 2.7 tonnes!

So far the team has collected a staggering 1600 tonnes of recycling and 986 tonnes of food waste recycling – that’s 634 refuse vehicles (4 tonnes) full in just one month!

The Council is asking all its residents to keep up the good work in to the New Year and to add recycling more to their New Year’s Resolution list – recycling in Rhondda Cynon Taf is so easy it’s one thing you’re guaranteed to keep up!

Councillor Ann CrimmingsCabinet Member for Environment, Leisure & Culture, said:

“In 2015 Rhondda Cynon Taf Council was crowned the fastest improving Council in Wales for its recycling efforts by the Welsh Government, when it hit over 60% for recycling targets and now sits within the top 5 for Wales! This is something that all residents can all be proud of – but we can still do more by just recycling one extra item, we can hit the 70% target set for 2020.

“In the run up to Christmas and over the festive period we have been calling on residents to sign up for food waste recycling and the response has been great with an extra 1605 people signed up over the last few weeks. You can sign up at any time to receive your free food waste caddy and start turning all that leftover food into energy which can be used to power homes.

“The Council has made a number of changes to improve the services that are available in recent years and residents are continuing to support the changes and these results are testament to that – Well done RCT and a huge thank you to the Streetcare team who have worked over the festive period, in some treacherous weather to collect it all!”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council provides a FREE weekly general, food, nappy and green recycling collection service to over 100,000 properties – this takes 169 employees and 78 vehicles.

In addition to the Council’s kerbside recycling services the Council also boasts six dedicated Community Recycling Centres – with an additional centre opening this year in Treherbert.

Don’t forget to sort out your recycling in to paper, cardboard, glass, metal etc before you visit the centres as they will no longer accept bags of mixed recycling.

These are based in the following locations across the County Borough:

  • Ty Amgen, Llwydcoed CF44 0BX
  • Cymmer Road, Dinas CF39 9BL
  • Nantygwyddon Road, Gelli CF41 7TL
  • North Road, Ferndale CF43 4RS
  • Treforest Industrial Estate CF37 5TT
  • Llantrisant 100% Recycling Centre CF72 8YT

All of these facilities will cater for all recycling needs, including white goods, cardboard, clothing, plastics, light fittings, wood, glass, metal, engine oil, fluorescent tubes, plasterboards, old toys, paint, tyres, old tv’s and lots more, including Christmas trees. There will also be a reuse store so that anything which is reusable can be and this will dovetail into the Welsh Government Sector Plans for reuse.

All six centres are manned and the attendants are happy to advise residents on recycling and assist them in disposing of their household material.

The centres are open Monday – Sunday 8:00 to 19:30 from April – October and Monday – Sunday 8:00 to 17:30 from November – March.

Residents are reminded to please clean all recycling items and remove all bottle tops and lids before placing items in to the clear recycling bags for kerbside collection.

During this busy period, if we have not collected your refuse/recycling as planned, please leave it at the kerbside as we may be working additional hours to clear a back log and we’ll get to you asap – our crews can work well in to the evening during busy periods and extra staff can sometimes be called in to clear the items the next day or at weekends.

From January 2015 green waste has been collected by a separate vehicle, but still takes place on the same day as food and dry recycling collections. This is being carried out to help reduce contamination of garden/green waste. If we accidently miss your garden waste, please contact the Council on 01443 425001 or emailrecycling@rctcbc.gov.uk and a new collection time/date will be agreed.

There are over 180 recycling bag collection points across the County Borough, where residents can collect food and clear recycling bags FREE of change- www.rctcbc.gov.uk/recyclingbags
