New technology for early detection of lung cancer trialled by Cwm Taf UHB
Clinicians in Cwm Taf are working with a medical technology company based in Rhondda Cynon Taf and the University of South Wales on a revolutionary device to potentially detect lung cancer at an early stage.
IMSPEX Diagnostics Ltd based in Abercynon has been working with Dr Paul Neil, Consultant Respiratory Physician from Cwm Taf University Health Board and academics from the University of South Wales, to develop a breath analysis device that will save lives by potentially identifying lung cancer early on.
Professor John Geen, Consultant Clinical Biochemist and Head of Research at Cwm Taf University Health Board said:
The project was showcased at Cwm Taf’s Health Innovation conference held this month which was designed to encourage staff to use their clinical expertise to bring forward ideas for improving patient care.
The event, held at the University of South Wales in Treforest brought together academics, clinicians and representatives from industry across Wales including medical and biotechnology companies, to share knowledge and expertise on funding opportunities for research, bringing products to market and intellectual property and commercialisation.
Chairman of Cwm Taf University Health Board Dr Chris Jones said: “Innovation is the rocket fuel that takes us forward. Innovating doesn’t always mean new technology, but is often about the new ideas coming from our staff on the frontline. They are the people who have the direct patient contact and the expertise to know what the solutions to problems might be and we need to incentivise that and give them the space to develop.”
