Minimum Price for Alcohol Bill given Royal Assent

The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018 was given royal assent in August.

It is hoped that the Act will address public health concerns around the effects of excess alcohol consumption, by targeting and reducing the amount of alcohol being consumed by hazardous and harmful drinkers.

It is estimated that excess alcohol consumption leads to nearly 55,000 alcohol-related hospital admissions a year, costing the Welsh NHS over £150m annual.

The new law will allow Welsh Ministers to introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol supplied in Wales, and makes it an offence for alcohol to be supplied under that minimum unit price.

You can read more about the new Act here, with statements from First Minister, Carwyn Jones and Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething included.
