Merthyr Tydfil Macmillan Fundraising Committee Wins National Award
The Merthyr Tydfil Fundraising Committee has received a regional volunteer award from Macmillan Cancer Support this month in recognition for their dedicated support and fundraising campaigns.
The fundraising group received the Committee Award at the charity’s Volunteer Thank You Event at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales on Sunday 4 June.
The award is given in recognition of teamwork, inspiring others, achieving outstanding fundraising success and raising awareness.
The committee hosts an entire calendar of diverse events and collections, including luncheons, quiz nights, coffee morning and agricultural shows.
In 2016, the group organised a fashion show with John Lewis which was supported by Jeff Banks and Only Men Aloud and attracted over 700 people. One of their events even included a session teaching Christmas floral arrangements.
To date, the committee have raised a staggering £765,356. Many members have had their own experiences of cancer and come together as a team to maximise fundraising and enable more people in the community to get involved and learn more about Macmillan.
On hearing the committee had won the award, Alison Lewis, Chair of the Committee, said: “We are so proud that this award has been given to the Merthyr Tydfil committee and would like to attribute it to the people of the area.
“It’s a very caring and generous community and people who haven’t got an awful lot always contribute.
“We try our best to involve different people in the community and if there’s any opportunity, we take it.
“We’re a very proactive committee and are delighted to have received this award.”
Susan Morris, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, says: “Macmillan was set up by a volunteer over 100 years ago, and our volunteers are crucial in helping us to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.
“We wanted to use Volunteers’ Week to say a well-deserved ‘thank you’ to all the people who give their time to help us. We also wanted to thank the Merthyr Tydfil Committee for their incredible fundraising efforts to help people affected by cancer.
“At Macmillan, we have a variety of volunteering roles and we always like to hear from people who might be interested in helping us out, because whether it’s minutes or months, hours or days, whatever time you can give really will matter.”
