Mental health services: Target change must result in improvement

Commenting on the Welsh government’s announcement of a reduction in waiting time targets for mental health services in Wales, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister Darren Millar AM, said:

“Too many patients are waiting far too long to access these services and, while I welcome a reduction in target times, it must result in urgent improvements.

“It will take more than a simple statistical change to ensure public confidence is restored and performance is boosted.

“Recent Labour failings in mental health services have been severe and nowhere is this more apparent than at Glan Clwyd’s Tawel Fan ward; the subject of a horrific report earlier this year.

“Waiting times for treatment and standards of care throughout these services require urgent progress in delivery.

“Labour’s record-breaking NHS budget cuts have hit frontline services and resulted in overlong waiting times in every speciality.

“Labour must properly invest in our health service and guarantee improvement.”
