Dr Gail Davies from Ynysangharad Surgery in Pontypridd has been announced as the joint winner of the GP of the Year Award 2015.
Each year the Royal College of General Practitioners Wales (RCGP) awards a GP the ‘Wales GP of the Year’ title in recognition of their outstanding care and dedication. The RCGP have described Dr Davies as “an outstanding example of what an excellent doctor can contribute to the community”.
Dr Davies’ nomination was put forward by one of her patients relatives who said: “She provided outstanding care and support to my elderly mother who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She made visits to her house on a regular basis, often late into the night and liaised on our behalf with pharmacists, district nurses and palliative care teams ensuring they received all the help they needed.
“Dr Davies goes above and beyond her role as GP to help her patients and their families; the whole team at the surgery have shown endless patience and support. They are constantly doing things to make life easier – it may not be a major life saving action but it’s the little things that have made our lives so much better”.
On receiving her award Dr Davies said: ”It was an absolute honour to receive this award. I have worked at the practice for 19 years and in that time I have got to know people very well. The award is a result of a great team effort from everyone who works at the surgery and they, I know, are as delighted as me to have been nominated”.
Dr Paul Myres, Chair of RCGP Wales said: “It is so heartening to hear patients’ stories about the exceptional care they receive from GPs and their teams across Wales. I feel inspired to hear about all of those nominated; they epitomise general practice at its best”.
