Labour party play politics with Hawthorn High School

It seems the Labour party are not content with their overwhelming majority on RCT Council , which allows them to ride roughshod over everyone and everything and do just as they like. They are in fact shameless in their blatant control freakery.

Their latest demonstration of this came with the recent decision to remove long serving Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell from the governing body at Hawthorn High School.

Mike has been a governor there since 1999, and has taken his responsibilities very seriously and always put a great deal of effort into the school. His term of office expires in September 2015 and last month he reapplied, only to find his application turned down by a Council committee that has, of course, a majority of Labour members.

Now this may have been acceptable had the committee decided to put a local ward member there, but no. The committee, which is chaired by the Cabinet Member for Education Eudine Hanagan, a woman who is no stranger to charges of nepotism, instead voted in a Labour Councillor who represents the Ynysybwl ward in the Cynon Valley. Pupils in her Ynysybwl ward do not even attend Hawthorn, as they fall into the catchment area of Pontypridd High School - unlike the vast majority of those in Mike's ward of Trallwn.

The minutes of the meeting make for amusing reading - if we were not talking about a subject as serious.

Cllr Sue Pickering apparently "had inadvertently completed her application form by expressing an interest in becoming a Governor at `Hawthorn Primary' School whereas she meant to express her interest in becoming a Governor at `Hawthorn High'." This was subsequently changed by an officer at the late request of Cllr. Pickering.

Obviously someone with a great interest in the school -so much so that she could not even put the correct name on her application form. It may have given an indication of her lack of commitment, but nonetheless her fellow Labour Councillors thought it far better to have someone from out of the catchment area to take up the position than someone whose political colours are different.

Cllr. Powell says he is angered by the decision and the brazen way in which the Labour party seek to ensure they freeze everyone else out.

"I will be keeping a close eye on her performance and will now have to direct all concerns raised by the parents and guardians of children of my ward to a Councillor who has abandoned her own residents and their children who attend Pontypridd High School for reasons known only to herself.

"It says everything about the Labour party mentality."
