Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and its partners organised the important event at Rhondda Sports Centre to allow older residents to access information and support on the services that matter to them.

The day was organised in partnership with the Rhondda 50+ Forum and Cwm Taf University Health Board to highlight health care, safe living, healthy living, social activities and more.

The centre’s hall was packed with 47 information stands, interactive displays, expert staff and a range of useful giveaways, such as information packs, handbag bells to deter thieves and energy-saving measures.

There were sporting activities to try out, as well as tea and Welsh cakes and the chance for everyone to have a catch up, reunite with old friends and make new ones.

Specialists from charities and support organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Care, Parkinson’s Disease, Leisure for Life, Heat and Save and Community Safety were also on hand to discuss issues with the attendees.

As well as being a useful and engaging way for older residents to find out more about the services that keep them happier, healthier and safer for longer, the event is also another example of what can be achieved with partnership working.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council works closely with the Rhondda, Cynon and Taf 50+ Forums, which represent a range of older people, working to ensure they have access to the support and services they need.

“Events such as this are an excellent way to showcase the range of services that are being delivered for, or on behalf of, older people across the county borough every day.

“We are so pleased so many people showed their support, especially those who had information stands and, of course, the older people who visited for the afternoon.

“We are entering an important phase as we prepare for the arrival of the Social Services and Wellbeing Act, which puts a firm emphasis on preventative work and care, ensuring people have the information, awareness and support they need to take ownership of their own health and wellbeing and are in a position to look after themselves and seek early assistance to prevent an escalation into crisis.

“Events such as this, as well as the partnership work and service delivery that sits behind it, show we already have a strong commitment to this approach.”
