Investment Announced for Rhondda Fawr Bus Stops
Almost £350,000 will be invested in bus stop improvements, to improve facilities for passengers in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Refurbishment of local bus stops is continuing in Rhondda Cynon Taf thanks to the Council securing a £264,800 grant and investing a further £21,000 from its own public transport fund to improve public transport infrastructure.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council secured the important funding (£264,800) from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund and is working to enhance the passenger waiting facilities along the Rhondda Fawr Strategic Bus Corridor.
This investment builds upon the £60,500 which the Council spent last year from its own funds, renewing bus shelters and upgrading facilities at 13 sites across the County Borough bringing the total investment up to almost £350,000 (£346,300).
The Local Transport Fund award will enable the first phase of a two phase project in the Rhondda Fawr to be completed and will provide:
- New bus stop poles and flags
- Raised kerbs that provide step free entry onto the new low floor buses
- Resurfaced waiting areas
- Renewal of the bus stop road markings at 42 bus stops in lower Rhondda Fawr
- 15 new shelters
It is hoped that funding for the second phase can be secured later this year and enable the whole Rhondda Fawr corridor to be upgraded.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of the Council, who is also responsible for Highways and Transport Services, said: “We were pleased to have secured this funding on behalf of our communities and it is great to see the plans become a reality.
“Throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf some of the newest vehicles in south Wales are running and it is important that the Council continues to work with its operating partners by similarly investing in the renewal of its public transport facilities”.
