Friends and family of Michael Hughes who competed in their second annual ‘pool marathon’ at Aberfan Social Club have raised £1,800 in his memory.

Pool marathon_POMichael Hughes, from Aberfan, died at the age of 53 whilst in the intensive care unit at Prince Charles Hospital in 2013.

Following his death, his family pledged to hold an annual pool tournament to raise funds for the unit.

This year’s 24 hour event was arranged by Michael’s son, Lewis -along with Aberfan’s Social Club steward Adrian Hughes.

Speaking about the care his father received, Lewis said: “We are very grateful for the very special care my father received from the truly dedicated team of staff at the hospital.”

Michael’s wife, Susan, son Thomas and other family members were there to support the club’s two pool teams during the marathon tournament.

After a full day of countless games of pool, another Michael Hughes (who also won last year’s event) was crowned the winner. The winner’s trophy was presented by Lewis and Thomas Hughes.

Sister Michelle Woods said: “We cannot thank Mrs Hughes and her family enough for their kind and generous donation of £1,800 to the intensive care unit.”

The Hughes family would like to thank everyone who made donations and those who helped sponsor the event.
