The scheme is just one of the ways in which the Council and its partner agencies are working, via 50+ Forums, to help improve the quality of life of older residents.
It is estimated there are 85,000 people aged fifty and over in Rhondda Cynon Taf – around a quarter of the population!
A large range of initiatives, including consultation events, information days and social experiences, are being delivered to ensure older residents have the support and knowledge they need to live life the way they want to – in a safe, happy and healthy manner.
The forums are a great way to share news and engage with older residents about the issues that matter the most to them.
The discount card was an idea from one of the forums and members are now working to get more businesses signed up and ensure as many people aged 50 and over sign up to the scheme, which is free, so they can take advantage of their tempting Treorchy discounts!
Cllr Mike Forey, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Services and Older Persons’ Champion, said: “This is a great way for older residents to enjoy the best of the high street with discounts and perks just for them!
“A discount card scheme is the latest in a series of innovative and useful ways in which the Fifty Plus forums are helping the Council and its partners support older people to live healthier and happier lives.
“Please contact the forum to join the scheme and also to find out other useful information, such as parking permits for town centre use, access to public transport including discounted travel and additional support for those who need it on buses and trains and more.”
Cllr Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Planning, added: “Treorchy is a lively and welcoming town with a great range of places to shop, eat and drink and socialise.
“We are so pleased and proud that the traders of the town have joined this scheme to offer additional benefits to older residents. Treorchy town is well worth a visit – make sure you bring your discount card and keep an eye out for the stickers in the windows of participating stores!”
