Disappointing budget for education: ATL Cymru

Commenting after the Finance Minister, Jane Hutt, revealed the draft Welsh budget this afternoon, Dr. Philip Dixon, Director of ATL Cymru said: 'This was a disappointing budget as far as education is concerned. The rise in spending will barely cover inflation and will certainly not fund the extra costs that schools will incur this year. The devastation of FE provision will not be reversed. We are also concerned that local authorities will try to passport some of the funding cut they have received onto schools. ATL Cymru is clear: we need to put education first for once. The opening decade of devolution saw our children being underfunded by over £600 per head by compared to England. Most commentators think that gap has widened since then. This budget will do nothing to close it. Education cannot be done on the cheap. Our children deserve more.'
