Decision on Rhondda & Tonyrefail schools reorganisation next week

RCT's Labour Cabinet meet next Tuesday to officially decide whether or not to move forward with the reorganisation of Rhondda and Tonyrefail schools.

The proposals to close several schools in the Rhondda and Tonyrefail, remove sixth forms from Tonypandy, Porth and Ferndale and create new 3 to 16 and 3 to 19 year old schools have met with outcry from parents in the Rhondda.

The plans first came to light last September, with a consultation taking place from October. The report has eventually come back to Cabinet for decision after a considerable delay.

The campaign against the proposals has been led by several former Head teachers and by RCT Welsh Lib Dem Chair Karen Roberts, who is a governor at Tonypandy Community College, one of the schools affected. She says

"Despite widespread and intense opposition the recommendation going to Cabinet is to approve these plans. A I have said previously in my opinion it is a ludicrous idea, but not a single Labour voice has spoken out against it.

"If the Cabinet vote, as expected, to push ahead next week then we will be taking the fight to the Welsh Government."
