Cynon Valley Museum Open Day
An Open Day is being held at the Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery on Saturday, January 31 – and everyone is welcome!
This fabulous FREE event, organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Cynon Valley Museum Trust, is aimed at all ages and will offer an amazing insight into the proud history and heritage of the area as well as giving visitors an exclusive ‘Behind-the-Scenes’ tour of the family tourist attraction.
Cllr Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “We are currently working in partnership with the Cynon Valley Museum Trust until a permanent management arrangement is in place and intend to re-open the museum temporarily once a month in order for the facility to retain its museum status
“We are delighted to be able to assist the Cynon Valley Museum Trust by offering the public this Open Day. This is the perfect opportunity for visitors, old and new, to go along and see how the Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery actually operates.
“As well as enjoying all the wonderful permanent exhibits, visitors will also be able to go behind the scenes and delve into the vast museum stores and archives to find out exactly what it takes to preserve and look after all of the artefacts that have been collected over the years – of all shapes and sizes.”
There will also be an exciting First World War talk on the day by Anne Watts, of the Cynon Valley History Society. She will be looking at life in the Cynon Valley during this turbulent time.
Exactly 100 years on, Mrs Watts will be reflecting on how local people coped during this terrible period in world history and how a warm Welsh welcome was given to young evacuees who fled to safety in the area from the main cities of Britain.
She will also speak about the people who left the area to fight for their country, many never returning home.
To book a seat at the talk or to book a place on the ‘Behind-the-Scenes’ tour call 01443 682036. Spaces will be limited at both events.
There will also be lots going on to keep the younger visitors amused, from arts and crafts sessions to a Treasure Hunt throughout the venue.
The Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery, situated at Gadlys, Aberdare, opened in 2001.
