Culvert installations underway at the A4061 Rhigos Road, Hirwaun
The Council has begun work to install two new highway culverts at the A4061 Rhigos Road, to alleviate the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall – requiring traffic lights at intermittent periods over the next three weeks.
The #RCTinvest scheme, which started on Thursday, November 5, is aimed at improving the drainage network at a section of the A4061 during periods of heavy rainfall – and will take around three weeks to complete. The location of the work is south-west of the roundabout where Rhigos Road meets the A465 – at the section of A4061 Rhigos Road leading to Hirwaun Industrial Estate.
The Council has appointed DEE Plant as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme. Temporary two-way traffic lights are required on this section of Rhigos Road at specific points of the scheme, to facilitate aspects of the work.
Please note, access to the A4061 Rhigos Mountain Road is not affected by these works, and will be maintained at all times.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “Work has now begun on site as part of this important flood alleviation scheme, which will install two new culverts at the A4061 Rhigos Road. This scheme is targeted at this busy commuter route which has been prone to flooding in the recent past.
“It is the latest flood alleviation scheme being undertaken by the Council throughout the autumn and winter months. In November 2019, works also begun on a drainage improvement scheme along Maesyffynnon Lane/Cardiff Road in Aberdare – along with culvert repairs at Cardiff Road/Dyffryn Road in Rhydyfelin, and Duke Street/New Park Terrace in Treforest.
"Traffic management is required at Rhigos Road to carry out certain aspects of the scheme over the next three weeks. The Council will work closely with its contractor to ensure the work is carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible, to deliver this important local flood alleviation scheme.”
