Council narrowly escape half million pound recycling fine

RCT Council have escaped a fine of more than half a million pounds after failing to meet recycling targets set by the Welsh Government.

Natural Resources Minister Carl Sargeant announced that he would waive the fines for RCT, Cardiff and Merthyr as they were working towards targets.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell said:

"This is very good news in that half a million ponds is money the Labour run Council certainly cannot afford to pay in fines.

"However it begs the question, what is the point in setting these targets if there is to be no action when they are missed?

"RCT have managed to improve their recycling rates again over the past year which is very good news, but there is still room for further improvement.

"One of the constant complaints from residents is that it is difficult to get hold of recycling bags. Residents want to make a difference to the environment by recycling - the Council needs to do more to help make that easy for them."
