This year marks the 56th anniversary of the New Year’s Eve event in Mountain Ash, exactly 30 years since the re-birth of the Nos Galan Road Races in 1984.

Due to the overwhelming response, there will also be no Race Registration on the night.

Organisers Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee will welcome thousands of people to the County Borough on Wednesday, December 31.

There will be a park-and-ride service operating on the night, with ample car parking available at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School as visitors from all over Wales, the UK and overseas flock to Mountain Ash.

The Nos Galan Road Races are held each year in memory of legendary Welsh runner Guto Nyth Bran. It attracts athletes of all ages and abilities from around the globe.

The 2014 Nos Galan Road Races start in the town centre at 4pm, with the first of the children’s races. There will also be an Elite Race and the Adult 5k Fun Run. Other attractions will include a spectacular fireworks display.

The highlight of the night will be the arrival of a Mystery Runner who will represent the spirit of Guto, carrying the torch from his graveside at St Gwynno’s Church down the hillside to the town centre four miles away.

Previous Mystery Runners have included Alun Wyn Jones, Linford Christie, John Hartson, James Hook, Nicole Cook, Jamie Roberts, Martyn Williams, Lillian Board, Gethin Jenkins, David Bedford, Shane Williams, Dai Greene and Samatha Bowen.

Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Cllr Andrew Morgan, who is also a Member of the Nos Galan Committee and local Member for Mountain Ash West, where the races take place, said: “I am delighted with the public response so far - it has been overwhelming.

“The Nos Galan Road Races is a highlight in Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s events calendar each year, having grown in popularity enormously in recent years.

“We would like to thank everyone who has registered to take part this year and wish you well in your training ahead of New Year’s Eve.”

Earlier this year, the Nos Galan Road Races was crowned Britain's Best Fun Run at the 2014 UK Running Awards during a ceremony held in London. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has also granted the Freedom of the County Borough to race founder Bernard Baldwin MBE.

The main sponsors of the 2014 Nos Galan Road Races are Vattenfall, one of Europe's largest generators of electricity and largest producer of heat; Kier Construction, Amgen Cymru, RCT Homes and Communities First (Lower Cynon Cluster).
