AM slams “pitiful” state of social housing in Wales

Latest figures show that more than 60,500 households are on social housing waiting lists in Wales, with Shelter Cymru describing the situation as a "housing crisis".

At least 60,569 households are on waiting lists but only 20 of the 22 councils have the information so the total figure is likely to be higher.

Shelter Cymru has also called on the Welsh Labour Government to invest in more affordable homes.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Housing, David Melding AM, said:

“These latest figures are deeply concerning and paint a pitiful picture of housing in Wales.

“Time and time again the Welsh Government has chosen to disregard the most up-to-date projections, which would have seen the development of thousands more affordable homes in Wales.

“Sadly, this reinforces the fact that when it comes to housing, the Welsh Labour Government lacks ambition, with tens of thousands of people standing to lose out on the opportunity to have a home of their own.

“We are nearly two years into this term, and after a whopping 19 years in charge in Wales, there are absolutely no signs the Welsh Government is getting to grip with this housing crisis.

“We urgently need to show more ambition in Wales and that starts by increasing support for families and providing more affordable, modern homes.”
